Introduction

March madness is my favorite sporting competition of the year. I love the excitement of the single elimination format and the social component of competing with friends, family, and co-workers to fill out the best bracket. I love the intensity of the fans and players. I like seeing who is going to be the Cinderella story of the tournament and cheering on my team (UCLA). I love all three weeks, from the 4 opening days of non-stop action, to the sweet sixteen, final four, and championship game.

For the non-sports enthusiast or someone who is unfamiliar with March Madness, you can feel left out of the social component of the tournament. Likely, many people you know through work, school, or a social setting will ask you to participate in a March Madness tournament pool. Below is a guide to teach you the basics, to help you sound like you know what you’re talking about, and to give you a few strategies for filling out your brackets. If you don’t know basketball, we also have a spectator's guide to basketball.
